Description
SOLAR RAPTOR® UV HID BirdLamp 35 Watt PAR30 Flood
The SOLAR RAPTOR® HID BirdLamp 35 W Flood has been specially developed to meet the needs of pet birds and aviary birds. It combines high light output with effective UVA and UVB radiation, thereby creating lighting conditions that are much closer to natural sunlight than conventional indoor lighting.
Birds perceive their environment differently to humans. Many species can see ultraviolet light and use this information, for example, to recognise conspecifics, choose a mate and forage for food. A lack of suitable UV light therefore often goes unnoticed by the keeper, but can have a long-term impact on the animals’ behaviour and well-being.
In addition to its importance for natural colour perception, UV-B radiation supports the body’s own production of vitamin D3. This plays a vital role in calcium metabolism and thus in strong bones, healthy eggshells and the animals’ general well-being.
The SOLAR RAPTOR® HID BirdLamp is based on modern high-pressure discharge technology (High Intensity Discharge, HID) and produces a sun-like light spectrum with a colour temperature of 5,000 Kelvin. Thanks to the high light intensity and a colour rendering of over 86%, colours are rendered naturally and the environment is made significantly more attractive for the birds.
A key advantage over many UV fluorescent tubes and compact lamps is its high UV stability. Whilst numerous alternative UV light sources show a significant decline in UV output after just a few months, the SOLAR RAPTOR® HID BirdLamp delivers a consistently usable UV spectrum over a long period, thereby enabling particularly economical operation.
Please note that window glass filters out almost all UV radiation. To ensure that the birds can actually benefit from the UVA and UVB radiation, the BirdLamp must be installed inside the aviary or bird room. Only then will the radiation reach the birds with sufficient intensity.
The BirdLamp Flood HID is particularly suitable for larger areas and provides uniform illumination of perching and activity zones. This allows you to create natural sunbathing spots that are readily accepted by many bird species.
Technical Data / Installation
The SOLAR RAPTOR® UV HID lamp must be operated with a suitable ballast.
The aluminium housing of the SOLAR RAPTOR® UV HID lamp reduces the temperature at the burner – improved heat management slows down the molecular changes in the quartz glass, which guarantees long-term UV stability. The HID lamp thus continuously emits a linear sunlight spectrum of 5000 K.
As glass blocks UV radiation almost completely, if the aviary is made of glass (even partially), the lamp must therefore be installed inside. However, for the safety of the animals, the lamps must be mounted out of their reach!
A ballast with the appropriate wattage (min. 35 watts) is required for operation.
The lamps must be operated in a thermally stable E27 lamp holder. The SOLAR RAPTOR® ClampLamps are ideal – these are supplied with a protective grille and compatible connectors for the SOLAR RAPTOR® ballasts and can be connected without tools.
Operating instructions
The recommended lifespan of the light bulb is 4,000 hours. Operation with thermostats is discouraged, as frequent switching on and off can cause the bulb to age quickly. A minimum operating time of 8 hours is recommended; if this minimum is significantly undershot, the lifespan of the SOLAR RAPTOR® BirdLamp UV HID lamp will noticeably decrease! The UV intensity of the lamp can change, as with all similar light sources, over time. To ensure optimal values for your animals, we also offer optional measuring devices to regularly monitor the UV output. This allows you to replace the light bulb when necessary, as the responsibility for timely bulb replacement lies with the animal keeper.
Important note
- When switching on the lamp for the first time, it must be left on continuously for at least 2 hours to allow it to burn in and stabilise. This will prevent damage to the bulb later on!
- Switching it off prematurely can destroy the lamp!
- Only replace the lamp and carry out installation when the unit is completely switched off – we recommend unplugging the power cord from the socket.
- The SOLAR RAPTOR® UV HID lamp must only be operated with a suitable ballast.
- The ballast should only be connected by a qualified technician to prevent injury to people, animals and damage to the equipment.
- Depending on the model, there is a protective film on the back of the ballast; this must be removed before commissioning to prevent thermal failure.
- Never install the lamp near flammable objects.
- Ensure that the Easy-Plug connection is screwed in correctly; this is the only way to guarantee protection against splash water. Each ballast must only be operated with the corresponding lamp. Ask your specialist dealer. Example: 35 HID = 35 EVG
Many of the live electrical components are under high voltage when switched on. - Each ballast must only be operated with the corresponding lamp. Ask your specialist dealer. Example: One 35 W BirdLamp HID = needs a minimum 35 W EVG
- Many of the live electrical components are under high voltage when switched on.
- Ensure adequate ventilation. Never cover the light bulb or the ECG.
- Use only temperature-stable lamp sockets.
- If the lamp operates abnormally, remove it immediately.
- To ensure that the UV lighting remains effective over time, check the lamp regularly using a suitable measuring device – such as a Solarmeter® handheld meter – as a drop in UV levels is to be expected due to normal wear and tear.
- Even when switched off, the housing of all SOLAR RAPTOR® products must only be opened by authorised specialist personnel or by the manufacturer itself; otherwise, any manufacturer’s warranty and liability will lapse. This does not affect your statutory rights arising from the latest Product Liability and Consumer Protection Acts.

Additional information
The following also applies to the BirdLamp HID Flood: As the UV output of HID lamps decreases continuously over time, the actual UV output should be measured regularly using the Solarmeter® 6.2R Reptile UVB or Solarmeter® 6.5R Reptile UV Index to determine the correct time for replacement.
