Besides warmth, light is essential for reptiles. It controls their day/night rhythm, influences active and resting phases and affects feeding behaviour and digestion. Many species also associate light with warmth and therefore specifically seek out bright spots in the terrarium to “sunbathe”. Depending on the area of origin, they also need more or less UV light to maintain their health.
Unlike humans, UV light is visible to reptiles. Without this light, they cannot perceive the normal colour spectrum and everything appears dull and colourless to them. UV light consists of UVA and UVB radiation. UVA radiation is elementary for the well-being, increases appetite, activity and the reproductive behaviour of reptiles. UVB radiation is even more important because it is the only way for animals to produce vitamin D3, which is essential for calcium metabolism – vitamin D3 synthesis.
The SOLAR RAPTORĀ® UV HID lamps are an optimal complete solution for diurnal terrarium animals that require sun-like light with UV radiation and heat. The modern UV high-pressure metal halide lamps reach the natural range of the sun with about 70000 lux. A much higher value than is the case with fluorescent tubes, mixed light lamps and halogen spotlights. Sun-loving reptiles are almost attracted to the light and enjoy the sunny warmth.
Available in wattages of 35, 50, 70 and 150, SOLAR RAPTORĀ® UV HID lamps offer the right lamp for every size of terrarium. The “SpotBeam” and “FloodBeam” versions differ in size/diameter (design). With wattages of 35 and 70, the “SpotBeam” version is a smaller spotlight with a smaller diameter than the “FloodBeam” version. The beam angle is correspondingly smaller.
The aluminium body of the lamp dissipates excess heat and protects it from overheating. An integrated reflector increases the light output many times over. The tempered glass used prevents dust from burning into the lamp, which would hold back the radiation.
UV lamps need to be replaced regularly, as the UV radiation decreases in the course of operation.
The UV HID lamps reliably supply reptiles with UV for approx. 1 year ā after that, the lamps should be replaced.
Installation
The lamps must be operated in a thermostable E27 lamp socket. Glass retains UV radiation almost completely, which is why the lamps should always be installed inside the terrarium. A ballast of the appropriate wattage is required.
Install out of reach of animals!

ClampLamps
– These are supplied with protective grids and compatible connectors for the SOLAR RAPTORĀ®
ECGs
(ballast) and can be connected without tools.
Note
Note Ideally, the UV value of a lamp should be measured regularly with the SolarmeterĀ® 6.2R Reptile UVB or SolarmeterĀ® 6.5R Reptile UV Index to determine the correct time for replacement.
