When setting up a terrarium, people often think first of equipment, furnishings or temperature zones. But for the animal itself, something else takes centre stage: light<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Not as an accessory.Not as a decorative element.But as a biological necessity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Whilst we humans perceive light primarily as brightness, for reptiles it is much more \u2014 it is essentially a complete information system<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n

\n\n

Reptiles see more than we do<\/h2>\n

This is because reptiles see differently and, as a result, see more than we do. This is due to their different photoreceptors, as reptiles are \u2018tetrachromats\u2019: they have four different types of cones in their eyes, i.e. photoreceptors with different light-sensitive proteins, the \u2018cone opsins\u2019. <\/p>\n\n

One of these types detects parts of the UV spectrum \u2013 particularly UV-A<\/strong>. Consequently, the so-called \u2018white point\u2019 or neutral point, at which something appears colourless or neutral, is different from that of trichromats (e.g. humans) or dichromats (e.g. horses). <\/p>\n\n

This means:Where two things look the same to humans, they may appear completely different to a reptile. Skin markings, conspecifics, territorial markings<\/strong> \u2013 many things only become visible through UV light.<\/p>\n\n

Just as things appear a \u2018uniform\u2019 grey to people with red-green colour blindness when they actually have a red-green pattern, reptiles perceive things that appear uniformly coloured to us humans as much more colourful. But only if their environment is also illuminated with light containing UV components! <\/p>\n\n

If this spectral range is missing from the terrarium, the animal is effectively deprived of an entire dimension of vision and thus a whole part of its environment; its habitat then appears \u2018unnaturally dreary\u2019 and colour-shifted. Keeping reptiles without UV light in their lighting therefore cannot be considered species-appropriate. And it can affect the animals\u2019 entire behaviour, both individually and in their interactions with one another. <\/p>\n\n

\n\n

UV-B: The Invisible Health Factor<\/h2>\n\n

UV-B radiation<\/strong> is equally important. It enables the body\u2019s own synthesis of vitamin D\u2083. <\/p>\n\n

Vitamin D\u2083 regulates:<\/p>\n\n

    \n
  • calcium metabolism<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • bone development<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • muscle and organ functions the immune system<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • the immune system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    Without an adequate supply of UV-B, serious deficiency diseases can therefore occur \u2013 even under seemingly \u2018bright\u2019 lighting.<\/p>\n\n

    Light Influences Behaviour<\/h2>\n\n

    Finally, for all living creatures, including reptiles, a species-appropriate, physiological day-night cycle (\u2018circadian rhythm\u2019) is also an important factor in their health. However, reptiles do not live by the clock \u2013 they live by light. <\/p>\n\n

    Through the UV index and intensity, light influences the animal\u2019s daily routine. And this, in turn, determines <\/p>\n\n

      \n
    • activity phases<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • food intake<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • skin shedding<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • reproductive behaviour<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • and thermoregulation (sunny & shaded spots)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

      In the wild, many reptiles specifically choose sunny spots with certain UV levels. In the terrarium, it is our responsibility to create the necessary environment in which they can live healthily and behave in a manner appropriate to their species. <\/p>\n\n

      \n\n

      Circadian Rhythm: The Internal Clock<\/h2>\n\n

      Light influences hormonal processes and the day-night rhythm.Unnatural spectra or constantly constant intensity can lead to stress and behavioural abnormalities.<\/p>\n\n

      A natural lighting concept therefore takes into account:<\/p>\n\n

        \n
      • the full light spectrum<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • sufficient UVA & UVB<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • realistic intensities<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • structured light zones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
        \n\n

        Conclusion: If You Understand Reptiles, You Understand Light<\/h2>\n\n

        Species-appropriate lighting is not an optional accessory.It is a central element of responsible care.<\/p>\n\n

        When you look at reptiles from a biological perspective, you realise:Light influences vision, metabolism, behaviour and well-being in equal measure.<\/p>\n\n

        And that is precisely why it deserves special attention.<\/p>\n\n
